The election results for the India General Elections 2009 will be announced on the 16th of May. Pune city voted long back, on the 23rd of April 09. So it’s going to be a long wait before we know if the candidate we voted for will actually make it to the LokSabha, the House Of the People and the lower house of the Parliament Of India.
The Pune registered voter count for 2009 is around 18 lakhs. Considering that only 40% voted, total votes cast would be around 7.2 lakhs. 36 candidates contested the Pune election. However only the top 4 or 5 candidates seem to have a real chance of winning the Pune seat.
Any calculated guesses on how the votes would be split this time? Would it be the Congress again or will the BJP manage to get the seat in 2009. Do you think the BSP / MNS / PGP or an independent candidate can spring a surprise? I came across the 2004 results and thought I would post them for your reference

Although I am unable to guess the 2009 winner for the Pune Loksabha seat, I think the following will hold true –
- BSP with D S Kulkarni and People’s Guardian Party with Arun Bhatia will see a significant rise in voter number as compared to 2004
- Both the BJP and Congress will see a reduction in vote percentage.
- Anil Shirole from the BJP will be hit by some traditional ShivSena voters now opting for Ranjit Shirole from the MNS
- Independent candidates will not make much of an impact
- It will be a far closer battle than in 2004 when Suresh Kalmadi from Congress polled 73000 votes and 10% more than the second place BJP.
- Numbers 1,2,3 & 4 will have less than 10% separating them from each other.
- Although we probably won’t see any stats to back this, I believe first time voters will hold the key to who wins in 2009.
Take a shot, add a comment and try and guess the winner of the Pune election results. We could all be proven completely wrong, but trying to guess the winner is certainly good fun.
